Thunderbird

On this webpage we will help you to configure your thunderbird in order to receive and send mails in connection with our DESY Zimbra mailserver.

Configuration to receive mails

Following are the general mailserverinformation which are needed to receive mails with Thunderbird.

Servername: mail.desy.de
Port: 993
Encryption: SSL/TLS
Authentication: Password, normal

The following steps will guide you through the configuration of your mailbox. Please be aware that the layout of the configuration can be different, depending if it is a first-time configuration of your account or if you modify an existing configurtaion, which you used before. (All Screenshots were made with version 38.1.0)

Start Tunderbird and click on "„Create new account: Email“. In the following windows please choose “Skip this and use my existing email”. The first-time configuration windows should appear now and you can insert the necessary serverinformations to connect to our mailserver.

To modify an existing configuration please navigate in the upper menubar to 'Edit' -> 'Properties' (Alternatively: Right-click on your mailaccount and choose 'Settings'). Now you need to navigate to 'Server Settings' and insert the necessary serverinformation.

With this configuration you should be able to receive mails with Thunderbird. In the following section we will show you the configuration how to send mails with Thunderbird.

In the following section we will show you how to configure Thunderbird to send mails with it.
Please be aware that the layout of the configuration can be different as well, depending if it is a first-time configuration of your account or if you modify an existing configurtaion, which you used before. (All Screenshots were made with version 38.1.0)

The initial procedure to create a new account during the first-time configuration is more or less the same. Please click on "„Create new account: Email“. In the following windows please choose “Skip this and use my existing email”. The first-time configuration windows should appear now and you can insert the necessary serverinformations which were mentioned before to connect to our mailserver.

To modify an existing configuration please navigate in the upper menubar to 'Edit' -> 'Properties' (Alternatively: Right-click on your mailaccount and choose 'Settings'). Now you need to navigate to 'Outgoing Server (SMPT server') and click on 'Add' to insert a new SMTP server. Please fill in all necessary SMTP serverinformation.

LDAP Configuration

During the next step we are going to modify the addressbook configuration in order to get access to our DESY adressbook in Thunderbird (though just with limited functions compared to Outlook). Please navigate to your account settings and choose in the left menubar 'Composition & Addressing'. Select 'Use a different LDAP Server' and insert following configuration data:

If there is no DESY server yet, please add it manually.

Name: DESY
Serveraddress: ldap.desy.de
Base-DN: ou=People,o=DESY,c=DE
Port: 389
Bind-DN: -keep empty-
Don't check 'Use secure connection (SSL)

Thunderbird Calendar-Plugin "Lightning"

Please Note that Thunderbird Lightning is not supported by DESY, as tests have shown various errors in handling calendar items and permissions.
