Here you can find information for end-users  for changing passwords on the central DESY computer systems. Two main functions are available for the users:

• information on your saved personal data
• the setting of a common password  for the default resources in the registry:
  'WINDOWS, UNIX, (AFS, AFS Zeuthen), Kerberos

Changes of the methods of working

 

• The login to the DESY Registry can be done with your central password in  the Hamburg or Zeuthen Intranet.
• With the DESY Registry you can set  simultaneously identical passwords for your user accounts on the platforms AFS HH/Zeuthen, WIN.DESY.DE. (As previously, the password can also be reseted by your group administrator or by the UCO -after passport identification-.)
• You will receive a warning via Email from the DESY Registry before passwords and user accounts expire:
• • For passwords you will receive warnings 40, 20, 10 days before expiration;  5 days before a daily warning is initialized. Your administrator receives a warning on the day after the expiration.
  • For user accounts the administrator receives warnings 100 and 50 days before the expiration date and another one on the day after the expiration. You will only receive warnings 50 and 5 days before the expiration, if this has been switched on for your account.
• Outside of DESY you can change your password on the webpage https://passwd.desy.de.
• Please note: Under Windows the button ctrl-alt-del "Change Password" shall not be used any more.
• User accounts will be setup by your administrator. The registration form must be printed, signed and sent to the UCO.

Short instruction/ Example

Retrieve https://registry.desy.de/registry in your web browser. You have to activate cookies in your web browser to work with the registry (f.e. Mozilla: Edit - Preferences - Privacy & Security - Cookies; Internet Explorer: Tools - Internet Options - Privacy).
Log in with your password and press Submit.
The following screen will appear (maybe at first you have to select "Change Password (self)" from the menu on the left).
At the moment the other items in the menu on the left side offer only static information. (The old Registry was an account database. Many users had multiple accounts and also multiple personal data for them; e.g. building, room and phone number have been handled numerously and independently. In the new Registry one person has multiple accounts, and the personal data only exist once for one person. Because of the temporary backwards compatibility and until the account supervisors have adjusted it, these persons are listed numerously, every entry with one account  through the migration from the old Registry to the new one.)
 

Please insert the new password twice and press the button "Save password", (possibly you have to scroll down), please check the response of the Registry and log out with the corresponding button "logout". Now you have identical passwords, synchronously set for UNIX/AFS and for the new Windows domain. Both will expire at the same time, and it is no longer necessary to set new passwords at different times and in different systems.

Particularities/Error Messages

Generally the password rules are decisive.

You can receive the following (bilingual) error messages:

Error Message	What to do?
Missing old password. Eingabe des alten Passwortes fehlt.	Please type in the old password, too.
Missing new password. Eingabe des neuen Passwortes fehlt.	Please type in the new password.
Not retyped the new password. Wiederholung des neuen Passwortes fehlt.	The new password has to be typed in twice.
New and old password are identical. Neues und altes Passwort sind identisch.	If you want to set a new password, you cannot choose one which you have already used before. Please enter a different one.
New password retyped different. Neues Passwort und Wiederholung stimmen nicht ueberein.	Probably you have made a typing mistake and you have to re-enter the new password in both columns.
Don't use your account name as part of the password. Accountname als Teil des Passwortes ist nicht zulaessig.	Your accountname can not be a part of your new password. Please enter a different one.
Password must use characters out of at least three different categories (see index). Passwort muss aus min. 3 versch. Kategorien zusammengesetzt sein (siehe index).	The password must use characters out of at least three different categories. You can find these password rules in the menu of the web interface of the registry under index. Please enter a different one.
Don't use a word out of a dictionary:{1}. Waehlen Sie ein Passwort, das man nicht im Woerterbuch finden kann:{1}	The password can't be a word out of a dictionary. Please enter a different one.
Found in history table of your last 10 passwords. Passwort in Tabelle Ihrer letzten 10 Passwoerter gefunden.	You can't use a password, which you have used as one of your last 10 passwords. Please enter a different one.
Old password incorrect. Altes Passwort nicht richtig.	You haven't typed in your old password correctly. Please try again.
Don't use firstname as part of the password. Vorname als Teil des Passwortes ist nicht zulaessig.	You have used your firstname as part of the password. Please enter a different one.
Don't use lastname as part of the password. Nachname als Teil des Passwortes ist nicht zulaessig.	You have used your lastname as part of the password. Please enter a different one.
Password size 7 to 14 characters required Passwortlaenge 7 bis 14 Zeichen erforderlich	Your password is too short (less than 7) or too long (more than 14 characters). Please enter a different one.
Illegal character in password Unzulaessiges Zeichen im Passwort	Your password contains an illegal character. Please enter a different one.
Illegal use of Desy names Unzulaessige Verwendung von Desy Namen	The password contains DESY names (desy, petra, hera ...). Please enter a different one.
New and old password are too similar. Neues und altes Passwort sind zu aehnlich.	The new password and the old password are too similar. Please enter a different one.
Unexpected Error. Please contact UCO. Unvorhergesehener Fehler. Bitte informieren Sie UCO.	There was an unexpected error. Please inform the UCO.
Password for Oracle Platform is not allowed to be equal to kerberos. Passwort für Plattform Oracle darf nicht dem Kerberos-Passwort gleichen.	It is not allowed to choose the same password for the Oracle platform as for the kerberos platform.
