Data exchange of large files

There are different possibilities to exchange data:

1.    Data transfer from DESY to external with Web services: see here

2.    Data transfer with the ftp-Server:

DESY provides a  ftp server to upload large files from outside to DESY.  Please contact the UCO (uco@desy.de) and indicate the following:

  • How many storage space is needed? (If nothing is stated,  2GB will be set)
  • In which directory should the data be made available? (ftp://ftp.desy.de/home/)
  • (optional) In which AFS directory should the data be synchronized (in  which direction)?

2.1. Data transfer from outside to DESY
In urgent cases you or the external contact person can put the files in the following directory: /incoming/own directory/ directory/own file
user: anonymous
password: Emailaddress
After that inform uco@desy.de about the transfer and name a directory  in the AFS where the data should be copied. Copying the data is only possible during the usual office hours and causes extra work.
Therefore,  if time allows, it is recommended to proceed as follows: You  request a  FTP-Account  from uco@desy.de. With this account you log in on ftp.desy.de with /home/UserID and you and your correspondent can built  up any directory structure. In this procedure you and your correspondent use the same  UserID and the same password. The credentials cannot be used as 'normal' accounts at DESY. If you want to exchange data  with more than one external correspondent, and - if the data should not be visible for others- you have to apply for each partner a new account.

2.2  Data transfer from DESY to external

Public: ftp.desy.de/pub/projekt
user: anonymous
password: Emailaddress

You name a AFS directory  from which you want to make data available via the FTP server. The data will be transferred automatically to the FTP server with a delay of about 15 minutes. All data in the AFS directory will be made visible on the FTP server!

Data  that should not be transferred publicly an be stored in /home/UserID or in a separate AFS directory. For this you have to apply for a  UserID at the UCO.  You can put the data directly on the  FTP  server, or  you can use the above mentioned  method  for synchronizing with the AFS. Again in this case, the UserID and the password is not for use on other DESY systems!
