Public Windows Terminal Server (

Status: August 2014

Although there is a large number of Windows-based decentralized workstations at DESY, there are a many reasons that require a centrally available Windows system:

  • Linux users who sometimes just need a Windows system
  • need of expensive and / or hard-to-install (special) software
  • General remote access to a Windows system in the DESY intranet, for example for work at home
  • Replacement of workstations by so-called thin clients
  • ...

For these purposes, there are the so-called Windows Terminal Server - computers with a specific Windows version, which allows, in contrast to the single-user Windows systems, multiple authorized users to connect to the terminal server and work simultaneously.

Depending on the purpose of such systems there are options available to the user with more or less tight restrictions, which always are a compromise between ensuring the system stability for all users of the terminal server on one side, and the user-friendliness of the system on the other.

The central Windows Terminal Server system is (currently) quite clearly not intended as a substitute for a personal Windows workstation - its objective is to provide a Windows system, where the most necessary applications are installed, so that, for example, a Linux user can use web sites that were created exclusively for Internet Explorer.

The Winterm system currently consists of three computers ("nodes") that share the load, ensuring - under normal circumstances - a round-the-clock availability of the system (24x7).
During the monthly Windows maintenances, however, Winterm is at least partially unavailable. Such and other operational restrictions will be reported on the IT trouble page, and can also be obtained via e-mail.

Who has access?

Basically, all holders of DESY accounts can use the Terminal Server. However, the access to the Terminal Server has to be activated, first, so please contact the UCO for activatit.\

Accessibility Options

The name of the Terminal Server system is The access is allowed from the DESY Intranet, but is limited to one session per user and can be initiated as described below.

Access from outside DESY

As the connection is only possible from the Intranet, for access from outside DESY - such as from home or during a business trip - first a connection to the DESY Intranet has to be made before connecting to the Terminal Server. It is recommended to use a ssh tunnels, alternatively you can use a VPN connection to DESY if you have a VPN account. .

This printer will be installed by IT and can then be post-installed by the user.
Printing errors, although the printer is installed and appears to be installed During the installation the printer is actually installed on only one node of the Terminal Server system - hence, you will be redirected to a second node at repeated login, the printer does appear as installed, but de facto it is not Please reinstall the printer again.
Login fails Can happen especially if the user profile is full. Message to UCO and cleanup by administrators.
