Replacing Munki with Jamf Pro Self Service

Munki, DESY's current software store, will be switched off on 1 October 2026 and replaced byDESY´s Jamf Pro - Self Service. What you need to do depends on your type of Mac – see below.

Your installed apps and data stay. Nothing is deleted by this change.

Guest, private or XFEL Mac

Please note: DESY´s Munki-Store may still be installed on your Mac.
Munki is being switched off, and on non-DESY Macs it cannot be replaced. Enrollment in DESY´s Jamf Pro is only possible for DESY-owned Macs.

Guest, private or XFEL Mac – please remove Munki:

  1. Open Munki Store.
  2. Run “Remove Munki”. This removes Munki together with its helper tools – no admin rights required.

Removing Munki does not delete the apps it installed.

XFEL Mac? XFEL runs its own Jamf Pro, and all XFEL Macs are already enrolled there – you are only seeing this because your Mac still has leftover DESY Munki installed. Please remove it with the steps above; this does not affect your European XFEL management. Questions? Contact European XFEL IT support.

Not sure, or need help? Contact the UCO.

DESY-owned Mac

Your Mac will move to Jamf Pro.

Already enrolled? If Jamf Pro Self Service is installed on your Mac (or its icon is in the menu bar), your Mac is already enrolled – nothing to do.

Otherwise, enrol it here: https://mdm.desy.de:8443/enroll (sign in with your DESY account).

Enrolling does not remove Munki right away – it only registers the Mac. Your software becomes available in Jamf Self Service from 1 September 2026, and Munki is switched off on 1 October 2026.

Timeline

  • Now: DESY-owned Macs enrol in Jamf Pro; non-DESY Macs remove Munki.
  • 1 September 2026: apps become available in Jamf Self Service.
  • 1 October 2026: Munki is switched off.

The “osquery” helper tool

During the migration a small helper tool, osquery (from Fleet Device Management), is installed on Munki-managed Macs. It collects inventory data that helps DESY IT plan the switch-off. macOS may show a notice that “Fleet Device Management Inc” can run in the background – that is this helper tool. It is removed again together with Munki by running “Remove Munki”.
