Loan of DESY IT Devices
The following devices can be borrowed from the UCO:
- Laptops
- Beamer
- Mobile phones
- Displays
Please note that the maximum rental period for all UCO equipment is six weeks. So, if you need a device temporarily, please contact UCO (Ext.: 5005, Email: uco-repairs@desy.de).
If you need a device for a longer period than six weeks, please contact one of your group administrators. They may provide you with an existing device which is already available in the group for an extended period of time or can buy a new device for longer-term use. The list of group administrators can be found at: https://it.desy.de/help_uco/administrators/
The amount of loan devices in the UCO is dimensioned in such a way that short-term device failures, for example in case of repairs or necessary new purchases, can be compensated. The same applies to business trips or workshops. For these purposes, a loan period of a maximum of six weeks is usually sufficient. Exceptions are of course repairs that might take longer than six weeks. Otherwise, an extension of the loan period beyond six weeks will only be granted in well justified cases.

Is Microsoft Office available on the loan devices?
Please understand that due to licence reasons, Microsoft Office is not provided on our rental laptops.
Alternatively, you can install LibreOffice on the loaner device via the Software Shop (DSM or Munki) or connect it to the central Windows terminal server (winterm) to use Microsoft Office there. You can find information about this on the following websites:
Please note that the use of Microsoft Outlook on winterm is not possible for data protection reasons as messages must be cached locally. Therefore, for the period of use of the loaner device, please preferably use the web interface https://mail.desy.de for reading emails and managing calendars. Alternatively, install Thunderbird on the loaner device via the Software Shop, but please be aware that calendaring with Thunderbird is not supported by IT. Can I link my Apple or Google account to a loaner device?
Please avoid linking the loaner device (smartphone, tablet, or MacBook) provided to you with your Google or Apple account. In such a case, the device will be registered in your account and it is mandatory to remove it again. Otherwise, we will not be able to reset the device in question.
If you want to install apps via the App Store, you can log in with your Apple ID to be able to install the desired apps.
If you have bound the entire device to your Apple ID, you must remove it from your Apple ID before returning the device!
