Access to the AFS

Status

Currently there is no access to AFS due to instability of the current AFS client.

Establishing a connection with xfreerdp

Status

A connection using xfreerdp (version <2.0) is currently not possible.

Workaround

Use of the latest, still in development xfreerdp version (as of 10/19)

Connection via https://rdsweb.desy.de/rdweb/webclient/ (additional external use of sshuttle required)

Change screen resolution

Status

This is basically not possible with RDP connections.

Drag and Drop on the desktop

Status

Currently not possible due to technical limitations

Printer installation

Status

Some printers can not be installed by users

Not installable printers report to the UCO:

This printer is then administratively installed and can then be subsequently installed by the users.

 
User profiles

User Profiles

All personal settings are saved under Windows in a so-called user profile. In contrast to a "normal" Windows system these user profiles are not stored "locally" on each node of the system on the Terminal Server system, but in a central location on the computer network ("Roaming Profiles"). This means on one hand, that you can still operate as a user with the same settings - no matter on which node of the system you are referred to during login. On the other hand, large profiles prolong the registration process, because in every time the volume of data of the user profile has to be transmitted (also see next section "space limitations").

Durability of User Profiles/data - Using the Desktop

User-specific data is stored in the so-called Windows user profile (see above), in particular the data which the user stored on the desktop. Basically - like on workstations - it applies also to the Terminal Server that important data should not to be stored on the desktop, but rather on the network drives H and N, because the latter will be saved centrally - in contrast to the desktop.
Attention: User profiles which have not been used for more than three months will be deleted for financial reasons.

Terms of use

Hints about using winterm

The Terminal Server system is a system for multiple users probably with simultaneous access. Therefore, actions that affect the work of other users and / or are to threaten the system stability, are not wanted and would possibly be stopped with appropriate measures.

Only one session possible

It can only be started one session on the terminal server - this has the consequence that when you attempt to initiate a second session, the existing session is simply assumed. So it is possible to start a terminal server session in the workplace and to work there. Later can be started from another workstation, or from home, or for presentation purposes on the same site.

Duration of inactive sessions

If there is no input made by the user for a long time during an open Terminal Server session, the sessions will be terminated by the system - this happens after 24 hours. This allows on the one hand, that a session from the previous day can be continued the following day, but on the other hand the system is not being overloaded due to accumulating inactive sessions. Basically, there is the risk of data loss. Therefore, sessions that are no longer needed should be terminated properly when logging off. If a session is canceled (see below),it remains for one more hour on the Terminal Server and can be reactivated within this period by resuming the connection from any location.

Space Limit

Since many users access the system, in terms of "space" the Terminal Server system underlies more restrictive rules than work stations. In particular, on local disks of the system cannot be written.

Additionally, Windows users have access to their home directory H: whose limit can be increased for business purpose from your Windows Administrators group.
