pubcp4a0 plotter - public plotter at IT

We have a public plotter in IT where posters or banners for events can be printed.

If you encounter any issues while using it, please contact the UCO colleagues on-site. You can also reach the UCO by phone at -5005 or via email at uco@desy.de.

Cost/Environmental Considerations

The average cost for a poster is approximately €10. The costs are usually not billed. To address both environmental and cost concerns however, please note the following:

  • Please collect your printed poster promptly from the plotter. Any posters not picked up within one week will be disposed of, unless the UCO has been given alternative collection arrangements.
  • Before printing, ensure—where possible—that the poster is in the correct format for your needs to avoid unnecessary misprints.
  • Before printing, verify—where possible—that any images included in the poster have the appropriate resolution to prevent unnecessary misprints.

Plotter Equipment/Features

  • It is an HP DesignJet Z6dr 44-inch printer with Adobe PostScript as the printer language.
  • It is equipped with two paper rolls. Both roll slots use 36-inch (91.44 cm) wide paper (coated, 140 g/m²), which is sufficient for A0 prints. If one roll runs out outside regular working hours, the printer can continue printing from the other roll.
  • Like its predecessor, it has a horizontal cutter to cut a print from the roll. Additionally, the new plotter features a vertical cutter, which can trim white margins on both sides of the print. Using the vertical cutter eliminates the need for manual post-processing with a cutting machine. See instructions below for usage.

Setting Up the Plotter

  • For Windows users, we have set up a new print queue "pubcp4a0" on adprint11. Please use only this new queue.

  • For Linux and macOS users, the new queue "pubcp4a0plotter" is available on cups-hasylab, cups-hep, cups-m, cups-public, cups-uni, cups-xfel, and cups-z.

  • To avoid misprints, do not send print jobs without checking the properties window in the print dialog. Ensure that the document’s paper size matches the desired output format.

  • The paper quality setting in the printer and print job must match. Therefore, please select "HP Coated Paper Heavy" as the paper type in the print job settings.

  • The horizontal cut is automatic, but the vertical cut must be activated and configured manually in the print job. In the Windows print dialog, select the corresponding options in the Properties window (under the "Paper/Quality" tab and then "Margins/Cutter" settings).

Printing via UCO

  • Instead of printing documents yourself at the plotter, you can send them directly to the UCO (phone: -5005 or email: uco@desy.de). However, ensure that the document is already in the correct format (A1, A0) and submit it as a PDF file.

Creating Documents in A0 or A1 Format
  • To format a new document in A0 or A1, open your design or layout program (often PowerPoint). In the program, create a new document and select the desired size under Page Settings or Document Settings.

  • Since the built-in PDF printer in Windows only supports sizes up to A3, it is best to set the correct dimensions beforehand. Afterward, export the document as a PDF.

Alternative

  • The paid version of Adobe Acrobat can print in A0, A1, or A2 formats. Here, you can adjust the page size of the PDF file under Page Setup.
