Printers on New Windows Print Server adprint11

For printing under Windows in the internal DESY network, there is now the new DESY printer server adprint11. In addition, there are some improvements in the printer infrastructure and also some technical improvements. On this page, the innovations are clearly presented.

⤷ Set up a printer (DESY-Hamburg)

To set up a printer on your DESY Windows device, proceed as follows:

  1. Connect the device to the DESY intranet. Either directly via network cable or from outside via VPN.
  2. In the Windows search bar, type: "desy printer".
  3. You should be offered a start menu entry named "DESY Printer":

  4. Select it. A list of all available printers opens:

  5. Enter the desired printer name in the "Name" field and click "Find now". Alternatively, sort the list alphabetically by printer name by clicking on the column heading "Name".
Please be sure to read the section "Changed Printer Names / Use of Presets", as some printer names have changed.
  6. Now double-click on the entry to add the printer and wait briefly until the window that opens has closed again. You will not receive a confirmation if the installation was successful. Perform this step with all printers you want to use. Afterwards you can close the printer search window again.

The printers installed in this way are now available in the printer selection of Office and other programs.

If you can not find the desired printer, first check the changed printer names in the following section. Otherwise, please contact the central IT helpdesk (e-mail: uco@desy.de, tel: 5005) for information on the printer name.

⤷ Changed printer names / use of presets

On the new adprint11 print service (as of July 2023), there is only one printer name per printer. A list of changed printer names can be found at the end of this section. This means that it will no longer be possible to use the print name to define settings such as the format, color or b/w, and similar. In this respect, the use of the print dialog and the available presets will be necessary in the future. The use of the presets is explained in the following.

In the print dialog, you are offered presettings regarding format, color, layout, etc. before the print process. You can use these presets and change them if necessary. The presets represent frequently used printing applications, so that you do not have to change all settings again and again for each printing process if they differ from the default settings.

You can access the preferences by clicking on the printer settings in the print dialog. In Windows 11 you will find this option in the lower left corner of the print dialog:

In Windows 10, you can find the button below the printer list:

Then you will see the window where you can change the settings for the print job and use the presets if necessary. You can see them in the middle of the dialog in the "One-click presets list" column:

The presets that appear there are named in English. Please always select the preset that best suits your requirements first and only then change the details that you want to set differently for this print job. If you do it the other way around, the preset selection will overwrite the settings you made before. Please do not use the "Factory Default" preset.

⤷New cover pages

If your printer has been set to print cover pages in the past for easier separation of print jobs, this will also be enabled on adprint11. The appearance of the cover sheets has changed slightly and it is not possible for us to block multiple printing of cover sheets if one person sends several print jobs in a row and in a short time interval.

If you want to disable cover sheet printing on individual printers in your group, we can set this up accordingly (assuming all affected individuals agree). The deactivation of cover sheet printing is only possible per print queue; deactivation for individual users or computers is not possible.

If you want to let us deactivate cover pages for a specific pinter, please refer to print.service@desy.de.

⤷Hints & Tips

  • Some application programs such as Microsft Edge come with their own print dialogs. The settings in these dialogs cannot be influenced by central IT. However, you can switch to the print dialog via the "Print using the system dialog" option. In Firefox, for example, this looks like this:

  • Printing results from Internet browsers are always a bit unpredictable. If you display PDF files using an appropriate browser plugin and print from the browser, it can lead to unexpected print results. We therefore advise downloading PDF files and printing them via a PDF application such as Adobe Reader.

⤷Feedback

We welcome feedback! Please write an email to print.service@desy.de and please enter suitable keywords, the printer name and the addition "(adprint11)" in the subject line. This makes it easier for us to identify the print server in question.
