03.06.2020 09:00 - 10:00 - Maintenance in the main data center

On Wednesday 03.06.2020 between 08:30 and 09:30 a.m. an old router in the data center will be removed from the network structure. This may result in a short interruption of a few seconds of parts of the data center network, which should not be noticeable.

28.05.2020 13:00 - 13:30 - Disturbance of the Login on some central Linux Systems

Today, Thursday 28.05.2020 between 13:00h and 13:30h a disturbance concerning the login to some central Linux systems like bastion.desy.de and passwd.desy.de will take place and last a few minutes. It is therefore not possible to log on to the affected systems during this short time.

The reason for this is a necessary change in the central authorization group (netgroup) afs-users.

Maintenance: 20.05.2020, Monthly Maintenance - Microsoft Windows

On Wednesday, 2020-05-20, between 18:00h and 21:00h there can be interruptions of the access to the Windows network drives H:, N: and S:.
It is recommended to log out before this time in order to avoid possible data losses. The access to public Windows systems (Terminal Server) is also temporarily not possible.

Attention: The Windows Maintenance Day is associated with the general release of the monthly Microsoft and Adobe security updates on the morning of that day,
which must be installed on Windows computers in a timely manner! Please restart your computer when requested.

The maintenance in Zeuthen will take place on Wednesday, 2020-05-20, between 18:00h and 20:00h.

Background is the monthly maintenance work on the appropriate central computers. This requires only in the most unfavourable case the entire period of 3 resp. 2 hours.

Maintenance: 18.05.2020, 06:00 - 08:00 Uhr, Maintenance of a Part of the DESY Web Sites (ZMS2)

On Monday, 18.05.2020 between 06:00h and 08:00h a part of the DESY websites will temporarily not be available. It will also not be possible to edit the affected web pages during this time. Among others, the following websites are affected by this maintenance:

NOT affected are the web pages in ZMS3, including:

The reason for the interruption is the migration of the ZMS2 websites to a new database server.

Current: 07.05.2020 Disturbance in QIP

Since today, May 7, 2020, there are some problems with changing IPv4 objects in the IP address management system QIP. The message "Fail to Safe" appears.

We are working together with the manufacturer to solve the problem.

As a workaround it can help to select the DHCP tab once after the message and go back to the Object tab and save again.

Maintenance (Update): 13.05.2020 - IP-Telephone System

The registration to Jabber is still not possible in some cases. Users affected by this problem can alternatively set up a call forwarding via the Self Service Portal (https://callmgr.desy.de/ucmuser/). This is now available again.

Together with the manufacturer, we are still working on solving the problem as quickly as possible.

Some phones are not yet registered and display a message to that effect. In such a case, the phones can be briefly disconnected from the power supply (pull the network cable), in which case they should also register.

No changes can be made on https://callmgr.desy.de/ucmuser/ at the moment. The internal Jabber registration is also not yet reliably possible.

We are therefore still working on a solution to the problem.

On Wednesday, 13.05.2020, maintenance work will be carried out on the IP telephone system between 6:00h and 8:00h.

The IP phones will re-register several times and some will load new software. The phones must not be disconnected from the network during this time. An interruption of active calls is not expected, but cannot be completely excluded.

ISDN and analogue telephones are not affected by the maintenance work.

Reason for the maintenance are necessary updates.

Finished: 04.-06.05.2020 - QIP maintenence work

Update 2: There is a QIP installation problem on the QIP-CLI servers peanut and mars.

peanut:      the QIP admins' own scripts don't run

mars:         the dynamic Vlan assignment on the switch ports is currently not working for hosts that are newly entered in the QIP.

We are working to resolve the problem together with the software support.

 

Update 1: Todays maintenance will be prolonged until 9 pm.

In the period from Monday, 04.05. until Wednesday, 06.05.2020 there will be maintenance work on the IP management system QIP.
The use of the QIP by the network segment administrators will be not possible or only limited during this time.

The maintenance work is planned as follows:
On Monday, May 4th, 2020 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Tuesday, May 5th, 2020 from 12 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Wednesday, May 6th, 2020, is a reserve for remaining maintenance work

As part of QIP maintenance, the enterprise server is exchanged for new hardware.
The CLI server "peanut" receives an update to QIP version 8.1.5.

Solved: Malfunction of the VPN Services
Current: 02.04.2020 - Shortages of IT equipment

Due to the coronavirus situation, there are currently shortages of IT equipment on the market. This is leading to longer delivery times and in some cases to higher prices.

The delivery time of DELL notebooks, is currently six weeks and the prices of the webcams used at DESY, for example, have almost tripled to 167,-.

Current: 11.03.2020 - Disturbance of a part of the central Website Management System (ZMS2)

The response times for editing and displaying the ZMS2 websites have been improved. The phone book can also be used again at an appropriate speed.

The editorial page of the main website www.desy.de is still experiencing delays.

We are still working on a solution to this problem.

Currently the usage of the central Website Management System (ZMS2) is impaired. This manifests itself in very long response times when displaying and editing web sites. Affected by this problem is also the Web-based phonebook:

Current: 10.03.2020 - Partial Malfunction of the Atlassian Tool Confluence

Currently we observe problems when editing web sites using the Atlassian Wiki Tool Confluence (https://confluence.desy.de). This means, if a page is saved you won't get the same page later again but some random previous version of it, so changes are lost.

Therefore, please check the page content of a revised version with the content of the updated version before you save the page.

The reason is a bug of the collaborative editing in the Atlassian Wiki tool Confluence. We are working on a solution to this problem together with the manufacturer.

Impact: The TSM backup servers will be partly down. It will not be possible to restore files on the central Unix or Windows systems from backups made by the TSM.

An apology must be made in advance: It is always possible that things do not work as planned. Therefore the given ending times may not be kept as promised.

26.05.2020 - Deleted chats of the video conference tool Cisco Meeting
For privacy reasons, the chats of the video conferencing tool Cisco Meeting are deleted daily at night.

The reason is that the chats may contain confidential messages that could be read beyond the actual video conference.

For important messages please use the email; for chats is Mattermost and for documentation the DESY Sync and Share service or confluence are the recommended tools.

 

08.05.2020 - New Documentation on the Topic - Transmission of sensitive Data -

02.04.2020 - Discontinuation Acrobat 2015

The support for the software "Adobe Acrobat 2015", which is currently available in DSM, will expire in April. Therefore it is necessary to replace Acrobat 2015 either by other tools or by the new DSM version "Adobe Acrobat 2017" (AMS purchase necessary).

This will be requested by DSM from Thursday, 02.04.2020, 11:00 a.m., when logging on to the Windows computer.

31.03.2020 - Supplementation of the IT Monitor with the load of the CISCO meeting service

The IT Monitor (https://it-monitor.desy.de) was supplemented with information on the load of the CISCO meeting service (https://meet.desy.de). The two new graphs can be found below the overview of the availability of the basic IT services.

The graph on the right side shows the number of active conferences, the graph on the left side shows the hardware load of the system (CPU load in %).

24.03.2020 - Change of the On-Site Services of the Computer Center and the UCO

In consideration of the current circumstances we change the availability of the UCO and the computer center.

The computer center will be kept staffed from Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 17:00h. The acceptance of goods during opening hours and the continuous supervision of critical services are guaranteed.
However, on-site contact is reduced to the bare essentials and requires prior (appointment) arrangement.

The UCO can be contacted by phone at the usual times from Monday to Friday from 8:00h to 16:30h or anytime by e-mail via uco@desy.de. The processing of your support requests is also guaranteed during daytime from Monday to Friday.

13.03.2020 - Change of LabVIEW Licensing

Users of the LabVIEW software must change the licensing of their LabVIEW installations by mid-April 2020.

The background is that the previous licensing will expire. All information on this can be found at


and the subsequent web pages, respectively. Since the number of available licenses is limited, the Runtime Environment (RTE) should be used instead of a full LabVIEW installation (if applicable).
