Digitally sign E-Mails

Target Audience

This documentation is intended for all users who wish to digitally sign their E-Mails.

Introduction

Using a personal security certificate (user certificate), E-Mails can be digitally signed. With the digital signature, the sender ensures that the E-Mails sent were composed by them and have not been altered during transmission. The digital signature is roughly comparable to a handwritten signature on a paper document - it certifies the authenticity of the person indicated as the sender.

Prerequisites

To follow this guide, you need a valid personal security certificate (user certificate), that is available in .pfx or .p12 format and has already been installed. If you do not yet possess such a certificate, please first follow the guide on how to request a user certificate.

Step-by-step instructions

Zimbra Webinterface (https://mail.desy.de)

   Insert the user certificate


 


Open any Internet browser (e.g., Firefox or Microsoft Edge) and access the Zimbra Web-Client, through which you can access your DESY E-Mails.

Log in as usual with your credentials.

 


 

 


Click on the 'Preferences' tab in the top menu bar and then on 'Secure Email' in the subsequent menu.
