Digitally sign E-Mails

Target Audience

This documentation is intended for all users who wish to digitally sign their E-Mails.

Introduction

Using a personal security certificate (user certificate), E-Mails can be digitally signed. With the digital signature, the sender ensures that the E-Mails sent were composed by them and have not been altered during transmission. The digital signature is roughly comparable to a handwritten signature on a paper document - it certifies the authenticity of the person indicated as the sender.

How you can verify the validity of digital signatures when needed (for example, when you receive digitally signed E-Mails from other individuals) is explained on the following website:

https://it.desy.de/services/uco/documentation/digital_signatures/verify_e_mail_signatures/index_eng.html

Prerequisites

To follow this guide, you need a valid personal security certificate (user certificate), that is available in .pfx or .p12 format and has already been installed. If you do not yet possess such a certificate, please first follow the guide on how to request a user certificate.
